Welcome

Welcome to the Department of Accounting and Law, one of the four departments within the University of Portsmouth Business School.  We have a range of undergraduate and postgraduate accounting and law programmes to suit your needs, as well as providing specific Continuing Professional Development for businesses in the region.  We also provide a wide range of accounting and law units for students studying other degrees across the university.

Students sharing a newspaper "We have a growing portfolio of degrees, which provides continuing study opportunities in the major areas of Accounting, Finance and Law."

If you are looking for an undergraduate course in Accounting or Law that is accredited by the professional bodies, we can help you achieve your ambitions.  Our Accounting programmes provide a range of exemptions from CIMA and ACCA, some giving maximum exemptions for those who are convinced that a career in accountancy is for them, whereas other courses within our portfolio provide restricted range of exemptions but allow a wider choice of study to prepare you for varied career routes.

Our family of Qualifying Law Degrees provide a wide choice for those who are interested in the study of Law. The Combined Honours Programmes allow for the Law to be studied with a range of other subject areas such as: Accounting; Business; Criminology; French and International Relations.  All these degrees are accredited by the Law Society and the Bar Council and consequently gain maximum exemption.  For those of you who may wish to incorporate the law in careers outside the profession, then these courses can also provide a rich opportunity to develop skills that are high in demand in other areas of employment.

Our postgraduate programmes in Accounting and Finance provide for graduates who wish to have either an applied course such as the MSc Financial Decision Analysis or those who prefer to specialise in pure Finance having studied it at undergraduate level.  The Postgraduate Law courses meet the needs of law and non-law graduates The MA/LLM Corporate Governance and Law provides a duel qualification with ICSA.  Having successfully completed either the MA or the LLM, students will be eligible for graduate status of ICSA.  We also have a LLM Law, this is targeted at those who prefer more independent study as the principal learning vehicle and therefore allows more flexibility for the student.

We are a strong vibrant Department, this is evidenced by continuous developments both in curriculum and supporting research; knowledge transfer activities and consultancy. Our Staff contribute to policy-making research and many are recognised nationally and internationally for their expertise.  This ensures that our curriculum is at the cutting edge and by linking with our employers we ensure that we provide our graduates with the skills needed in the workplace.  Our performance in the most recent Research Assessment Exercise of grade 4 puts us at the top of the Business Schools in the new universities.

We are happy to discuss any queries you may have and provide opportunities to visit us to enable you to choose the most appropriate course for your needs.  I wish you success in your choice – if we can be of assistance please do not hesitate to contact us.
