Student and Neighbour Liaison
Q – My student neighbours are very noisy what can I do about it?
A – In the first instance we would advise that you approach your neighbour directly if you are happy to do so, as they may not realise they are causing a disturbance. A polite note or a knock on the door will normally be enough to remind students that they need to be more considerate.
Q – I have approached my student neighbours regarding noise but it is still on-going, how can the University help?
A – When we first receive a complaint we will write to the students to make them aware that a complaint has been made, informing them of what the University expects from students living in the City and make them aware of the steps the University will take if the problems continue.
If the problems you are having continue after our initial contact then we would ask that you let us know as soon as possible so we can then speak to the students directly.
If they are still on-going after we have spoken to the students then we can refer the case to the Community Tutor who can take disciplinary action against the students if it is felt appropriate.
Q – Can the University evict students from their property?
A – The University has no control over where students choose to live in the private sector as the houses are owned by private landlords and the contract is between the landlord and the student tenants. If we are aware who the landlord is then we will contact them and advise of any problems so the landlord can then speak to the students tenants and advise of what is expected of them under the terms of their contract, and what steps the landlord can take if they are in breach of their contract.
Q – Students are always making noise when walking home in the evenings can the University do anything to help?
A – It is difficult without being given a property address to know if the noise is being made by students so we are limited to the action we can take. If a property address is provided then we can confirm if they are University students and take the appropriate action.
