The University of Portsmouth Environment Network (UPEN) was established in 2010 to coordinate and promote the diverse array of environmentally relevant teaching and research from across the University.

Understanding interactions between the environment (natural, managed and built) and human populations is a global priority... The University is keen to build on its existing contribution to this agenda, through its research and educational activities...more

UPEN exists to "promote sustainability through environment-related education, research and innovation". We aim to:

  • Promote and facilitate excellence
  • Strengthen environment-related collaborations, both internally and externally
  • Support efforts to improve the environmental performance of the University

We do this through three themes:

  • Ecosystem Stability and Environmental Change
  • Environmental Hazards and Engineering
  • Sustainable Society

At a glance

  • A cross-faculty network helping to facilitate the engagement of 250+ university staff who are involved with environment-related teaching, research and knowledge transfer.
  • The University is committed to reducing it's carbon emissions by 30% by 2016
  • Over 40% of our students are studying for degrees which could directly contribute to the environmental challenges that lie ahead. The Students’ Union has gained a Gold NUS Green Impact award for the second year running.
  • 36 projects worth over £5.5 million which have had a direct positive impact on the environment and future behaviour of companies in the UK.
