Environment Network (UPEN)
Understanding interactions between the environment (natural, managed and built) and human populations is a global priority.
Few now doubt the importance of our impact on the global, regional and local environment, or question the need to develop technologies and strategies that allow us to conserve, restore and sustainably exploit the ecosystems in which we live. This global need to understand and manage the environment is manifest in the policies and priorities of governments, research councils, industry and many third sector organisations: priority areas include food production, climate change, water resource management, renewable energy, low-carbon technologies, to name but a few.
Higher Education Institutions can and should make a significant contribution to the delivery of the “Environment agenda”, both through research and knowledge transfer, and through educational programmes that provide the knowledge base and skill set needed by industry and society.

The University of Portsmouth is keen to build on its existing contribution to this agenda, through its research and educational activities and through the sustainable management of its estate.
The University of Portsmouth Environment Network (UPEN) has been established to coordinate and promote the excellent and diverse strengths that exist across the institution and to facilitate new collaborations among both internal and external partners.
These UPEN web pages are designed both to provide an overview of our capabilities and existing activities, and a source of information about potential funding sources and partnerships.
