Science and the Mary Rose

Wednesday 20th March 2013, 6.00-8.00 pm, The Mary Rose Story, Portsmouth Historic Dockyard

Join staff from the Mary Rose Trust and the University of Portsmouth as they discuss the important role Science and Technology play in the conservation of the Mary Rose and the many associated artefacts. It will be shown how scientific techniques are used to characterise artefacts, determine reactions occurring within them and develop suitable conservation treatments. Following the lecture there will be the opportunity to speak to the researchers, have a tour of the conservation facilities and discover the science learning activities offered by the Trust.

Suitable for all ages, free event but places must be pre-booked from Eventbrite

Exploring the Seven Seas: Tsunamis, Whales and Icebergs

Wednesday 20th March 2013, 7.00-8.30 pm, Richmond Building LT1, University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth PO1 3DE

Oceans cover most of the Earth. The last decades have seen a host of wonderful discoveries, most of them using sound and sonars. In this talk, Dr Phillippe Blondel from the University of Bath will present examples from around the world, taken from his own research. The first part of the talk will present the innovative sensors (many of UK design) which have revolutionised our knowledge of the Blue Planet and its seabeds, from mid-ocean ridges to coastal areas. The second part will focus on applications, including the understanding of past tsunamis (and when they might happen again), marine habitats and the migrations of grey whales, as well as the role of acoustic sensors in monitoring the effects of climate change and human activities as far as the Arctic. Organised by the Portsmouth and District Physical Society.

Suitable for all ages, free event, no booking required.

Mapping the Universe

Thursday 21 March 2013, 6.00-7.00 pm, Park Building (Room 2.23), King Henry I Street, Portsmouth PO1 2DZ

A public talk by Professor Will Percival, who will review the latest theories of the history of the Universe from the Big Bang to present day. The evidence for this model will then be considered, focussing on how large surveys of galaxies provide a wealth of information about the Universe in which we live. The Universe has an interesting history, going through periods of rapid acceleration and deceleration, rather like a car in rush-hour traffic. By mapping the Universe as a function of look-back time (the time taken for the light from distant galaxies to reach us), we can observe these different phases, and understand the processes causing them.

Suitable for all ages, free event, but please book from Eventbrite

Astronomy in the City

Monday 18 to Friday 22 March 2013, 6.30-8.00pm, Gunwharf Quays (Outside Bar 38)

Come along to a stargazing night in Gunwharf Quays hosted by astrophysicists from the Institute of Cosmology and Gravitation.  Come and use telescopes to get a closer look at craters on the Moon or the stellar nursery of the Orion Nebula. Chat about what interests you, and ask questions about stargazing, the Universe, or being a scientist.

Suitable for families and all ages, free event, no booking required NOTE: Weather dependent
