A unique online service designed to help creative practitioners profit from their skills is being launched this week.

The new website is for artists, musicians, designers and digital media professionals who want to make a living from their skills and become a professional business operation.  The service which is available across the UK, is being launched by the Creative Industries Business Advice and Skills service (CIBAS) run from the University of Portsmouth.

BusinessNewsCibas The site offers advice on everything from how to set up in business and taking care of Intellectual Property to making the most of social marketing and branding.  Users can use the online diagnostic tool or contact professional creative advisors, ask questions and at a local level book a one-to-one appointment with an advisor.

Paola Campari Moss, Director of CIBAS, said the service provides all the tools creative professionals needs to start up or enhance their business.

She said:  “There is a wealth of creative people in the UK who need advice and support to take their expertise to the next level and turn their work into something profitable.

“Artists know how to showcase their work, but to survive in the marketplace they need to turn their work into a successful business.  The site offers advice, ideas and inspiration from creative practitioners and business professionals.”

Louis Sellers contacted CIBAS after graduating from the University of Portsmouth in 2010 and is now running a successful drum tuition school and recording studio in Andover.  He said:  “CIBAS was incredibly helpful with setting up my business.  They helped me broaden my contacts, helped me find business start-up funding and acted as a mentor.  Most importantly, they helped me put faith in my own business.”

The new web site marks the sixth year that the CIBAS service has been helping people develop successful business skills.  Since 2006, CIBAS has helped more than 600 artists and creative businesses with one-to-one advice and guidance. In the same period, more than 1,700 individuals have attended CIBAS training, networking and continuing professional development events.
