Finding a part-time job
Most students work during term-time for financial reasons, however, a part-time job can also provide you with useful work experience; whatever work you do will help you start to develop the skills that employers look for. Sign up / login now to view our Jobs Board, it has part-time vacancies in a wide range of areas (Customer Service, Administration, Catering, Bar, Care Work, Marketing, Sales, Cashiers, Retail and working in call centres). There have been over 1,200 part-time and summer vacancies advertised online last year.
Top Tips to help you find a part-time job:
1. Take a look at all the information available online in the 'Finding a part time job' section.
2. Come along to a Part-time Drop-in session held every week during the term from 10am-12pm and 2pm-4pm. Check out the additional part-time events held during the year for information on the Part-time Workshops and Part-time Jobs Fairs.
3. Prepare a draft Part-time CV using the guidelines below. Bring your draft CV to a CV Wednesday session to be check by an Adviser.
4. When you have prepared a good CV, register with the Jobs Board to view the current vacancies and keep checking every few days for new vacancies.
5. When you sign up for the Jobs Board there is an option to receive email alerts about new vacancies
6. When you see a vacancy that you are interested in and you have the skills that the employer is looking for, apply via the details on how to apply to the employer in the advert.
7. You can also find your own job by taking your CV along to the shops, restaurants and bars in Gunwharf Quays, Commercial Road and Southsea and ask if they are recruiting. See our Speculative applications guide for information on how to directly approach local employers with your CV.
8. MorethanWork - for information on international students working while at university, employment rights, employment law etc.
9. Take a look at the new vacancies in the local newspaper and sign up to receive their email alerts on new part-time vacancies.
10. Local recruitment agencies can also be a useful source of part-time jobs. Many local employers will regularly advertise their part-time vacancies with us on the Jobs Board. Further information on where to look for opportunities is available in our Vacancy sources section.
