Why is work experience important?
A large part of your studies while at University will be about employability after your course.
It's important to gain and develop these key skills to make yourself more employable once you have graduated.
Work experience gives you real-life employability skills that are invaluable when applying for a job as a graduate.
Employers expect a range of transferable skills when they recruit graduates, such as problem solving, analytical skills, team skills and commercial awareness.
By taking action early you will be able to stand out from the crowd when applying for jobs!
What type of opportunities are there?
There are many different types of work experience out there and it's important to find out which is right for you.
This could be paid or unpaid, formal or informal, or dependant on how much time you have to dedicate.

Placements – Work placements and self-employment placements are offered on many courses and can be a compulsory part of your degree.
Your first point of contact to find opportunities will be your placement office in your Faculty.
Internships and Vacation work – Gain valuable work experience over the vacation period, with internships and vacation schemes offering between one to four months paid work.

Skilled voluntary work – Volunteering is a great way to develop skills to build your CV and do something really worthwhile with your spare time!
