Recruiting a student
Volunteering
Many students at the University of Portsmouth choose to volunteer within their local community. If you are a charity, third sector or statutory organisation we will be able to help. Our students come prepared with a wide range of skills and experience, which can be deployed to help your organisation. The student will get the opportunity to test out their knowledge in real-life working environments and you will get an extra pair of hands to undertake a specific project.

Placements
Student placements can be a useful way for you to drive a business project forward that because of day-to-day pressures might not otherwise be undertaken.
Many of our degrees have a 9-12 month period of employment built into the structure of the course and this is an integral part of a student's education. This period, called a placement, enables the student to gain valuable and relevant work experience and also benefits employers by offering them a chance to take on fresh, intelligent and enthusiastic people. Placement students have a high level of skill and flexibility and can offer applied knowledge from their studies, resourcefulness and enthusiasm.
Placement opportunities in business, marketing, accounting, economics, HR and law are dealt with by The Portsmouth Business School Placements Office.
Placement opportunities in computing, engineering and mathematics are dealt with by the Faculty of Technology's Student Placement and Employability Centre.
Placement opportunities in the creative and cultural industries are dealt with by the Faculty of Creative and Cultural Industries Placements Office.
Part-time and summer employment
Many students are actively looking for part-time work, whether directly related to their course or for additional money while they are at university. Students are available to work in the evenings, weekends and in their free time from lectures during the week.
Students offer employers a flexible and willing workforce with many skills including customer service, team working and communication skills with experience of working under pressure. Students can bring an extra level of motivation and enthusiasm to your organisation with excellent IT skills.
Vacancies are advertised directly to students on the Purple Door Careers and Recruitment Online Jobs Board. There are currently over 8,800 registered Jobseekers, both students and graduates.
Employers advertise their vacancies online with the full job details, company details and the skills that you require a student to have. The online advert will include details of how you would like a student to apply for your vacancy. Most employers require students to email them with their CV and employers are then able to review the CVs at a convenient time.
Summer employment – many students will remain in Portsmouth over the summer and will be looking for part-time hours during the term with full-time hours during the summer or for employment just for the summer. Students can be of great benefit to employers when their staff are taking their summer holidays.
To advertise a part-time or vacation vacancy, employers are able to advertise their vacancies directly online by completing the online form.
