Biography

I am interested in the interface between public and local representations of minority groups and social inclusion in Europe, with a particular interest in Roma minorities. With a passion for using innovative research methods such as photo elicitation, I also enjoy using a critical application of approaches from sociology, social anthropology and cultural studies.

I completed my PhD in Cultural Studies at King’s College London in 2007, looking specifically at the situation of Roma (Gypsy) minorities in Hungary, carrying out 15 months of ethnographic fieldwork and comparing local practices with wider representations of ‘Roma’ such as those emanating from other scholarly work and European institutions. I carried out some post-doctoral research at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in 2008, before gaining a full-time position at the University of Portsmouth in 2009.

I teach in the professional area of social work that I find challenging and enjoyable. I also continue to carry out research, which currently includes a follow-up study revisiting my PhD research, funded by the British Academy (2013).

Teaching Responsibilities

I currently teach on research methods and about different aspects of minority inclusion in global contexts on undergraduate and postgraduate courses in the Professional Area of Social Work. I also enjoy contributing my specific research knowledge and skills to other courses in the University of Portsmouth, including ethics and methodology sessions at the PhD Graduate School, and lectures on the situation of Roma minorities, particularly through the Centre for European and International Studies Research (CEISR). I am an active member of CEISR, currently in the ‘Transnational Europe’ cluster. I supervise postgraduate research including supervision on the Professional Doctorate Programme. Outside of Portsmouth, I regularly contribute to a variety of seminar series and international conferences (see further information below under ‘presentations’). I have also been involved as an expert for the European Commission research funding process (FP7).

Research

I am interested in the interface between public and local representations of minority groups in Europe with a particular concern for Roma (or Gypsy/Traveller) minorities and post-EU accession migrants. I also look critically at discourses around social inclusion. Along with a passion for using innovative research methods for marginalised groups such as photo elicitation. A turning point in my life was when I lived in Hungary from 2000-2002 as part of a pan-European youth programme. My experiences in Hungary, including grassroots work with Roma children and families, motivated me to do postgraduate studies that included 15 months of ethnographic research in a primary school in the Southern Great Plain region of Hungary.

Currently, I am using skills gained through my PhD to begin exploring experiences of migrants from Hungary in the UK, with a particular interest in migrants working as carers. I also maintain an interest in Roma minorities through collaborating with an art project on a local Traveller site and continue international academic links through the University Association for Contemporary European Studies (UACES) academic network ‘Romanis in Europe’ and the EU network ‘European Academic Network on Romani Studies’.
