Biography

I lead and teach on the BA programme in International Development Studies here at Portsmouth.  Prior to arriving in Portsmouth in 2012, I taught courses on development studies, international political economy, colonial history and sociology at the University of Manchester, University of Leeds and Liverpool Hope University.

Research

I am a development studies specialist with a background in sociology and social & cultural theory.  I have regional interests in Latin America & the Caribbean; the European Union, and China.

My main area of research in recent years has been in exploring the relationship between culture & development in policy & practice.  This is reflected in my book The Politics of Cultural Development: Trade, Cultural Policy and the UNESCO Convention on Cultural Diversity (Routledge, 2016)

I have further interests in the study of globalisation and neoliberal governmentality, and in theories and histories of imperialism.
