Biography

Sue has taught History at the University of Portsmouth since 1988.  She has long standing research interests  in the fields of gender and women’s history, sexuality and oral history. Her numerous publications have made her a leading social historian of twentieth century Britain. She is especially interested in working class women. Her current research concerns the Women’s Liberation Movement in Britain c 1968-80 and in particular its impact on personal life.  She has extensive experience of oral history and has conducted hundred of interviews across many different projects, as well as teaching oral history. Sue also teaches a special subject on ‘Gender, Sexuality and War 1922-80’ and an option ‘The First World War, A Social and Gender History’.

Sue is a fellow of the Royal Historical Society, and a committee member of the Feminist Libraries and Archives group. She is also a member of the Social History Society, the Oral History Society, the International Oral History Association and Llafur (Welsh people's History Society).
