PhD Study

Our postgraduate research programme is open to both full-time and part-time students. Students are expected to pay their own fees or make other arrangements for them to be paid. A direct debit scheme is available to spread the payments until March (for October enrolment).

A number of PhD bursaries are advertised annually, usually in January for a start the following October. Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences PhD bursaries.

Integral to the postgraduate research programme is the researcher development programme, offered by the Graduate School. All commencing students are expected to attend courses offered on this programme, which runs throughout the PhD programme.

PhD Bursaries

The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences offers fully-funded PhD bursaries across the range of specialisms within the Centre for European and International Studies Research. The current application period is closed. 

ESRC social sciences PhD funding applications now open

You could get funding through the ESRC South Coast Doctoral Training Partnership (SCDTP) if you start a social sciences PhD programme in the 2017/18 academic year.

As well as covering all programme fees, the studentship also includes an annual maintenance grant, which is £14,553 in 2017/18.
