Channel MOR Workshop

The Future of Marine Renewable Energy

A Channel MOR workshop (jointly organised by the University of Portsmouth and Southampton City Council) was held on the 20th January 2015 at the Royal Beach Hotel and disseminated the Channel MOR project outputs, key stakeholders experiences of working in the MRE (Marine Renewable Energy) sector and also provided networking opportunities for delegates from the sector (offshore wind, tidal and wave energy).

Channel MOR (Marine Offshore Renewables) is a cluster of MRE related projects which were selected under the INTERREG IV France (Channel)-England programme and ran from January 2014 to February 2015. The project set out to support Small and Medium Enterprises (SME’s) in accessing MRE markets and provide the Channel area with collaborative opportunities. The event attracted 88 delegates of which the majority represented SME’s in the MRE sector. The event focused on the past experience and future opportunities and challenges for SME’s to enter the MRE supply chain and covered funding opportunities for such companies.

The key speakers include Peter Andrews (E.ON), Mark Francis (Perpetuus Energy) Steve Sharp (GROW Offshore), Benn Faulkner (Renewable Advice), Michael Starling (BMT Group) and Theo Botha (Blade Dynamics). In addition Professor Dylan Jones (University of Portsmouth) introduced the Channel MOR Project, Dr Graham Wall (University of Portsmouth) spoke on the Strategic Factor Analysis for Hampshire, Dorset and the Isle of Wight as well as chairing the day and Xiaodong LI (University of Portsmouth) spoke on a Decision Support Tool that is being developed to enable SME’s to gain more information about the resource requirements needed to enter the offshore wind industry. Professor David Cooper, Dr Michel Leseure and Dr Dawn Robins, both from the University of Chichester, gave presentations on the key themes of the day, Strategic Factor Analysis for the Channel region and the Channel MOR web-based portal respectively (see channelmorenergy.eu).

The workshop provided a great opportunity for MRE companies to share their experiences and to make potential contacts for future collaboration. During the breakout session, all attendees discussed and exchanged their opinions for MRE development in the future. This successful event contributed to identifying potential MRE opportunities, challenges, and ways to develop a greater MRE network in the Channel area.
