Modeling and Optimal Control Applied to Dengue Vector
Dengue fever is a febrile infectious disease transmitted by mosquitoes and has a high mortality rate. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 390 million people are infected in more than 100 countries in all continents. Currently no dengue vaccine has been developed; therefore controlling the mosquito is the only known method to protect people from the dengue fever.
The most used controls are physical (by removing mosquito breeding sites) and chemical (by using insecticide). Other possible alternatives are genetic and biological controls. The main disadvantages of those controls are high damages to the health and the environment, and the large cost of the application.
Some studies have been performed in order to optimize controls of the mosquito population that transmits dengue. Optimization techniques and numerical results of this problem will be given and discussed here in this presentation.
Biography: Helenice de Oliveira Florentino is a professor at Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP), Brazil. She has PhD in Computational Mathematics area from the University of São Paulo State (USP). She has been involved in research, teaching, course development in the Operational Research area and supervision of postgraduate research students. She is Chair of the optimization committee of Brazilian Society of Computational and Applied Mathematics (SBMAC). Her research is optimisation problems with particular interests in optimisation models for Biosystems. She was invited to the Department of Mathematics at the University of Portsmouth as a visiting professor for a period of 12 months for development of research with Professor Dylan Jones.
