Soft OR and Integrated Methodologies

Soft OR is about the incorporation of judgments, expressions, vague, qualitative measures as opposed to hard quantitative values. This approach offers richness to the decision making process, can cater for multiple world views in modelling and can enhance the quality of the output as it can overcome many of the assumptions embedded in rigid quantitative analysis. The pioneer of soft OR is Peter Checkland through his work on Soft Systems Methodology (SSM).

Integrated methodologies are useful in two-folds: Firstly, hybrid methods dealing with the same problem can overcome the deficiencies inherited in using a mono model approach on the hope/assumption of having advantages cancelling disadvantages that exist in other models. Secondly, integrated methodologies are useful in that an output of one method can be an input to another method.
