CSL Conference 2012

Two hundred years after Dickens's birth in the city, Portsmouth's Centre for Studies in Literature hosted this interdisciplinary conference considering the relatively unexplored aspects of his life and work.  Speakers re-examined a broad range of themes in contemporary and Victorian contexts.

Special Events

Afterlives: Mrs Dickens in Fact and Fiction

A public lecture by Professor Lilian Nayder, author of The Other Dickens: A Life of Catherine Hogarth (2011). Following the lecture, Professor Nayder was ‘in conversation’ with Orange and Booker Prize nominee, writer Gaynor Arnold, author of Girl in a Blue Dress (2008), to debate the cultural afterlife of Mrs Charles Dickens in fact and fiction. The authors will be available to sign copies of their books during the drinks reception.

Miriam Margolyes, Dickens's Women

As part of her global tour to celebrate Dickens's bicentenary, the renowned actress, Miriam Margolyes, performed her show, on the site of the original Portsmouth Theatre. This event was organised and funded by The Centre for Studies in Literature, University of Portsmouth in collaboration with the Portsmouth Grammar School and rapidly sold out.
