Biography

Jessica gained a first class BA (Hons) in English Studies at The University of Stirling, before receiving a distinction in her M.Litt in Renaissance Studies from the Scottish Institute for Northern Renaissance Studies based at the University of Strathclyde and then returning to Stirling to complete her PhD. Having completed the Postgraduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education (University of Portsmouth), Jessica is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

Jessica joined the English Department at Portsmouth in 2011, having previously taught at the University of Cumbria, Lancaster University and the University of Stirling. Her teaching experience ranges from Chaucer to Contemporary Women’s Writing.

Teaching Responsibilities

Jessica teaches across the undergraduate literature courses at all Levels, and supported students undertaking the undergraduate LiFE unit and the FHSS Master's by Research course. She is particularly interested in supervising dissertations on early modern drama.

Research

Jessica's main research interest is in early modern drama, particularly exploring the relationship between the plays and their legal, political and historical context. Her monograph, Staging Authority in Caroline England: Prerogative, Law and Order in Drama 1625-1642 (Ashgate, 2013), focuses on ideas of common law and prerogative in drama of the commercial theatre under Charles I, particularly in plays by Richard Brome, John Ford, Ben Jonson, Philip Massinger and James Shirley. Her next major research project will explore the changing relationship between madness and justice in Elizabethan, Jacobean and Caroline drama. This project will further develop her interests in revenge drama of the early modern period.

Alongside her interest in the early modern commercial theatre, Jessica is interested in Jacobean and Caroline court culture, poetry and masques.
