My PhD examines the representation of male friendships within American fiction written after the Second World War. It specifically focuses upon the connection between American masculinity and male-bonding within this contemporary literature. It also considers the function of male violence, including sexual violence, within these male friendships.
I am specifically concerned with the white middle-class male who feels emasculated in post-war American culture by an ever expanding, urbanised and consumer-driven populace, and threatened by the increasingly visible homosexual figure and the politics derivative of feminism. I explore how iconic twentieth-century American literature presents violence as the only means of re-establishing masculinity and a male-centred space.
My central research interests are contemporary American literature and culture, gender and queer theory and theories of identity.
