I am currently a PhD student with ICJS. My research is concerned with how the Criminal Justice System accommodates for the needs of people with autism spectrum disorder. Focusing upon the initial stages of contact with the CJS my study is concerned with four areas. Firstly a survey has been conducted to determine what police officers know about ASD and to discover the opportunities officers have to take part in training. Secondly a survey has been conducted with Appropriate Adults to find out about their experiences of working with people with ASD and their knowledge and awareness of the needs of people with ASD. Experimental studies have also been conducted to explore how readily people with ASD understand the police caution, and to discover if a written version improves comprehension. Finally studies have been done to explore the best ways of eliciting witness information from participants with ASD and members of the general population.
During the last two years I have taught in seminars to undergraduate students at Portsmouth. This has included teaching on the introduction to psychology course and research and criminal justice.
