Dean served 30 years in the Police, mainly within the Criminal Investigation Department as Detective Superintendent head of Major Crime; Director of Intelligence and as an Operational Command Unit Chief Superintendent. He was an SIO on the Historical Enquiry Team (HET) re-investigating historical murders in Northern Ireland. He spent three years teaching Investigative Interviewing to detective officers in Hampshire police where he was a tier 5 interview advisor.
He is currently the Senior Forensic Pathology Manager within the Home Office responsible for overseeing the provision of the forensic pathology service to police and coroners in England and Wales and acts as the 'Resident SIO' in the National Crime Scene Managers Course delivered by the College of Policing.
He has been a Associate Fellow of Portsmouth University since 2005 and is a Professional Doctorate Student and part time lecturer.
As Detective Chief Inspector within the National Crime Faculty, lead a team which wrote and introduced many national training products including the SIO Development Programme and the Initial Crime Investigators Development Programme (ICIDP) as well as the first Tactical Interview Management Course (now tear 5) delivered in 2000. He also sat on the National Police Group overseeing Investigative Interviewing.
Dean is currently studying a Professional Doctorate in Criminal Justice, and examining the police investigation of homicide.
