Why take this course?
Accounting and finance are vital functions in any economy. The strong reputation of accounting in the UK has always made it an attractive place in which to study this subject, and the trend towards internationalisation of accounting and auditing standards can only enhance the employability of UK-trained accounting and finance graduates throughout the world.
What will I experience?
On this course you can:
- Join the course at either the second year or final year stage depending on your level of relevant previous study

Only those who have previously studied at higher education level should apply. Applicants must have completed 1, 2 or 3 years (depending on academic profile) in higher education.
For year 1 and 2 entry applicants require English language proficiency at a minimum of IELTS band 5.5 with no component score below 5.5. For year 3 entry applicants require English language proficiency at a minimum of IELTS band 6.0 with no component score below 5.5.

Structure & Teaching
Year one
Develop your understanding of finance and gain an awareness of the different roles within the sector. You will cover topics such as business accounting, management and economics.
Core units in this year include:
- Financial Management
- Business Accounting for Finance
- Financial Markets and Communications
- International Economics
- English Language Grade 5
Year two
Strengthen your knowledge through more advanced study of certain themes and continue to develop your English language and business communication skills. You will also undertake an individual business research project on a topic of your choice.

- International Financial Management
- International Accounting
- Independent Study for Accountants
- English Language Grade 6
Teaching and Assessment
Our teaching approach involves a varied structure of lectures, seminars, tutorials, workshops and practical sessions. We aim to provide a stimulating environment that encourages use of IT teaching methods, as well as participation in group discussions and projects, alongside individual study.

Facilities & Features
Bloomberg Suite
You can use this essential business research tool and gain real-life financial experience. Created by the Mayor of New York, Mike Bloomberg, the system is used by over a quarter of million finance professionals globally. You too can virtually access the same data, analytics and software used by city traders via one of our Bloomberg terminals.
International Office
We are a very cosmopolitan community with more than 4,000 international and EU students from over 100 different countries. The role of the International Office is to provide you with extensive support to make your time here as stress-free and enjoyable as possible, enabling you to focus on your studies.
Computing
We have invested heavily in open access computer suites across campus. Great working spaces with high-spec PCs (multimedia and CAD), Macs and printing facilities. There is also more specialised software and equipment available such as large format printing, audio-visual equipment and language laboratories. Should you need any assistance, there are specialist technicians on hand to support you in using the facilities.
University Library
Modern, comfortable and a great learning environment, our library offers a wealth of information including 400,000 books, DVDs, maps and thousands of online ejournals and newspapers. Many electronic resources are available anywhere, 24/7 and our friendly staff are always on hand to help.

Career prospects
Financial management is a key function in any company, and therefore you will benefit from a range of roles available to numerate and commercially astute graduates. Along with the different areas of finance, you can also widen your career focus to industry and commerce, in fields such as banking, consultancy, fund management, insurance, investment and law. By combining the study of finance with developing effective business communication skills, you will be highly sought after in the international job market once you graduate.
Overall, this course provides a variety of opportunities including the option to continue with further study such as the MSc in Forensic Accounting and the MSc Finance at Portsmouth. You will also be eligible to apply for graduate schemes with major accounting firms and many large multinational companies.
