Why take this course?
This ‘top-up’ course will further your existing knowledge about the dynamic world of business. It will provide you with the opportunity to acquire deeper knowledge of key business and management topics that are highly relevant for any management career.
This course aims to be mutually beneficial to both you and your employer, as you apply your learning to your workplace via work-based learning and assignments.

240 HE credits from University of Portsmouth Foundation Degree in Business and Management or Leadership and Management, or 240 HE credits from a similar Business qualification which may be subject to both conditions and a satisfactory interview. If appropriate, prior learning may be assessed and accredited in accordance with University policy, which includes the setting of a time limit (normally 5 years) to ensure currency. Students should be employed in a role that offers appropriate opportunities for undertaking the work based learning units.

Structure & Teaching
Year one
You will begin the course by exploring a range of contemporary business issues on topics such as risk management, cybercrime and sustainability. Investigate the main factors that influence the strategic decision-making process in organisations and undertake a systematic review of your own or another organisation as part of your learning experience.
Core units in this year include:
- Contemporary Issues in Business
- Strategic Management
- The Intrapreneur/Systems Thinker
Year two
In your final year of study you’ll cover topics within the areas of contemporary management theory and practice alongside the development of business improvement techniques. Also, round off your studies by undertaking a substantial research project on a business topic of your own choosing.

- Business Improvement and Creativity

Facilities & Features
Academic Skills Unit (ASK)
ASK will help you become a successful university student. Our workshops are designed to improve a number of essential academic skills from essay writing and understanding plagiarism to revision and exam techniques. This is a great way to enhance your academic performance and make a smooth transition into university study.
Computing
We have invested heavily in open access computer suites across campus. Great working spaces with high-spec PCs (multimedia and CAD), Macs and printing facilities. There is also more specialised software and equipment available such as large format printing, audio-visual equipment and language laboratories. Should you need any assistance, there are specialist technicians on hand to support you in using the facilities.
University Library
Modern, comfortable and a great learning environment, our library offers a wealth of information including 400,000 books, DVDs, maps and thousands of online ejournals and newspapers. Many electronic resources are available anywhere, 24/7 and our friendly staff are always on hand to help.

Career prospects
With this qualification under your belt, there will be a range of career opportunities within business open to you, including marketing, sales, administration, e-commerce, accounting and human resource management.
You will also be eligible to progress onto a relevant Master's programme offered by Portsmouth Business School, or elsewhere.

This course is delivered in partnership with you and your employer.
