Why take this course?

In recent years, there has been an increasing emphasis on leadership as well as management. Without effective leadership, management lacks purpose and without effective management, leadership will fail.

This course aims to be mutually beneficial to both you and your employer, as you apply your learning to your workplace via work-based learning and assignments.

What will I experience?

On this course you can:

  • Gain a thorough grounding in how to manage people alongside the skills to be a confident leader
  • Tap in to our Library’s vast selection of electronic resources, which can be accessed from anywhere with an internet connection
  • Proceed to a full degree by doing a ‘top up’ at the University of Portsmouth or elsewhere

What opportunities might it lead to?

Whilst studying for the Foundation degree, you will automatically be entitled to studying membership of the Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM). Upon successful completion of your studies, you will be entitled to professional qualification for the ILM Level 5 Diploma in Leadership and Management.

Once you graduate, you’ll gain an established and nationally recognised qualification that will equip you for employment in a wide range of business settings.

If appropriate, prior learning and relevant work experience may be assessed and accredited in accordance with University policy, which includes the setting of a time limit (normally 5 years) to ensure currency. Students should be employed in a role that offers appropriate opportunities for undertaking the work based learning units.

Year one

This course has been built on the underlying ethos of 'leading from the inside out' – that is, you can only be an effective leader of others if you can effectively lead and manage yourself. The course structure, therefore, starts with a focus upon your personal leadership qualities and skills and moves through the leading and managing of other people to, finally, leading and managing an organisation.

Academic Skills Unit (ASK)

ASK will help you become a successful university student. Our workshops are designed to improve a number of essential academic skills from essay writing and understanding plagiarism to revision and exam techniques. This is a great way to enhance your academic performance and make a smooth transition into university study.

Computing

We have invested heavily in open access computer suites across campus. Great working spaces with high-spec PCs (multimedia and CAD), Macs and printing facilities. There is also more specialised software and equipment available such as large format printing, audio-visual equipment and language laboratories. Should you need any assistance, there are specialist technicians on hand to support you in using the facilities.

University Library

Modern, comfortable and a great learning environment, our library offers a wealth of information including 400,000 books, DVDs, maps and thousands of online ejournals and newspapers. Many electronic resources are available anywhere, 24/7 and our friendly staff are always on hand to help.

This course is a route to further study. If you successfully complete the Foundation degree, it is the equivalent to the first two years of a degree-level course.
