Why take this course?
This degree is ideal if you are looking for a career in television and radio broadcasting, an exciting area of study that is moving fast and changing every day.
The curriculum is very hands-on, with 70 per cent of it practical and 30 per cent theoretical. The perfect course if you are creative, technically minded and interested in designing, directing, presenting, editing and producing audience-friendly television and radio programmes.
What will I experience?
On this course you can:
- Use our purpose made tv studios to produce weekly live TV and produce, direct, film and edit TV programmes for broadcast
- Write for TV and radio broadcasts, applying the latest industry practices to your work
- Benefit from our links with BSkyB, Talkback, RAW, Envy and the BBC, and become an Avid Certified User
What opportunities might it lead to?
Our course specialises in a multi-skilling approach, much favoured by the TV and video industry itself. You will gain a comprehensive understanding of the many roles required to maintain a broadcast television channel, and there are opportunities to operate and explore many of the roles required for TV production.
We are also accredited with Avid to offer a certified user editing course (The Avid MC101) that is industry recognised and respected.

Structure & Teaching
Year one
You will begin to develop the key elements you will need to run a TV channel, as well as be introduced to video production hardware.
Core units in this year include:
- Film and Video Editing
- Introduction to Graphics
- Production Practices
- Presenting and Writing for Television
- Television Skills
- E-portfolio
We also offer a particular unit that will help develop your CV and future contacts in the TV industry.
Year two
During your second year you will focus on more advanced, professional video production, business issues and post-production editing techniques.
Core units in this year include:
- Advanced Editing and Encoding Workflow
- Live Television
- Video for Web
- Television Client
- Preparatory Project and Careers for Creative Technologies
Options to choose from in this year include:
- Introduction to Radio Production and Presentation
- Digital Photography
- Student Enterprise
Year three*
As well as some core units, this year will give you the chance to showcase your practical skills. This includes the production of weekly live television content, documentary production, the running of the TV channel alongside your final-year project.

- Final-Year Project

Teaching and Assessment
You will experience a variety of teaching through lectures, seminars and hands-on workshops.
However, independent study and self-motivation is also an essential part of your studies. We encourage you to read from our numerous resources, take out University kit or use computer workstations in your own time to enhance your learning.
How are you assessed?
Due to the practical nature of this course, assessment is extremely varied and includes:
- essay and report writing

- written exams
- practical exams emulating real-world practice

My course is dedicated to providing essential TV industry skills. The course is very hands-on and unique because it runs an actual TV channel, with weekly live TV shows. Our absolute focus is TV and broadcasting, and we are very successful in getting graduates into employment within the TV industry.

Facilities & Features
TV Studios
You will have access to our purpose-built TV studios that allow the production of all types of television work. You'll use professional cameras (Sony EX1 and EX3), sound mixing kit, the Newtek Tricaster system and a TV Broadcast Server (Capital Networks – Audience.TV). All this equipment enables you to get loads of practical experience and ensures you are working to an industry standard.
CCI Channel
Take part in your very own TV show or produce a broadcast-quality documentary. Use our CCI TV channel to develop your skills and share your potential with others. TV has no boundaries and you will be able to easily promote yourself via the work you are producing.
University Library
Modern, comfortable and a great learning environment, our library offers a wealth of information including 400,000 books, DVDs, maps and thousands of online ejournals and newspapers. Many electronic resources are available anywhere, 24/7 and our friendly staff are always on hand to help.
CCI TV is a weekly magazine show that goes out live every week at 12 o’clock, all around the campus; so it allows students to see us on the TV, broadcasting their work and broadcasting our own work, and it gets other students really excited that there is a show about them and about the University.

Career prospects
This course is a great starting point for those who want to get into the television business. You will be well informed with current practice and have the key skills to jump straight into the industry.

Many graduates have also found great positions with independent production companies, while others have set up their own companies or have successful freelance careers.

Work experience
Throughout your course, you will be encouraged to further your experience by engaging in real outside broadcast activities. For example, tutors and students are often requested to participate in live outside broadcasts and television studio recordings, and our links with the television industry (including BSkyB, the BBC and Avid) and the local community create many opportunities to work on high-profile projects.
You also have the option to take a year in industry which is extremely beneficial in increasing your employability for when you graduate. Studying abroad is another opportunity made available to you through the Erasmus scheme.
