The overall aim of the course is to develop student understanding of well-established principles and the application of this knowledge in the context of aircraft engineering. Also, to provide a suitable progression route to an honours degree course; the educational base for aircraft maintenance engineering licences.

The FdEng is part of the Army training that leads to registration by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) due to REME Special Registration Agreement with the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) and IET.
