Foundation degrees are courses with a stronger emphasis on work based and practical learning than traditional BSc courses. The Foundation Degree in Sport Fisheries and Aquaculture is designed to meet the needs of the fishery management and aquaculture industry for practically skilled employees with a good technical and scientific background. Successful students can progress to Year 3 of the BSc programme.

The Foundation Degree is linked with the first two years of the BSc (Hons) Degree programme. There is an emphasis on vocational skills with numerous visits to fish farms, fisheries and research centres as well as the involvement of students with fish farmers, fishery managers and the support of industries. Subjects studied include: water quality; fish anatomy and physiology; fishery management and ecology; aquaculture; fish health and nutrition. During the programme, the students spend at least 12 weeks on industrial placements working on fish farms, fisheries, processing units and research establishments both at home and abroad.
