Course overview
The Faculty of Science engages in leading edge research in a variety of areas that include staff from the Department of Sport and Exercise Science, Biological Sciences, Psychology, Pharmacy and Biomedical Science, Geography, Health Sciences and Social Work, and Earth and Environmental Sciences.
The MRes course will provide applicants with an opportunity to focus their research interests on one or two areas of science whilst also giving them the opportunity to work towards being able to translate their learning into research related outputs (e.g. submission for a peer reviewed publication, peer reviewed research/knowledge transfer grant application, presentations). With students developing a wide variety of skills, experience and competence throughout their studies, the MRes will also provide a thorough grounding should students consider moving towards doctoral studies, or pursue research related activities as a career.
The course is run in conjunction with the University Graduate School and provides students with the option to conduct either two smaller research projects or a single larger project.
Course content
The course is offered via full-time (one year) and part-time (two years) modes. The following provides an overview of the full-time course content (part-time students will complete the 60-credit unit in the first year and the 120-credit unit in the second year).
- Research Preparation and Development (60 credits)
- MRes Science Research Project (120 credits)
The units involve a number of taught sessions which are selected by the supervisory team and the student from those available from the Graduate School Development Programme (GSDP) and from faculty and department/school subject-specific provision.
