Sarah Manton - MSc Child Forensic Studies (Psychology And Law)

I am a police officer working in child protection and in 2001, after much cogitation and deliberation, I decided to take the plunge and embark on the PG Diploma in Child Forensic Studies. I kept asking myself where I would find the time to study when I already had a very demanding full-time job and whether not having studied for over 13 years would be a hindrance but only time would tell.

When my first module dropped onto my doorstep I recall only too well the feeling of horror as I looked at its contents but after setting aside time to read through the material and focus on the task ahead, my passion for the subject began. As I progressed through the modules I found each and every topic more thought provoking and the sense of achievement more rewarding.

After attaining my Diploma, the excitement of embarking on my MSc and taking on my own research was just too much to resist. After careful planning and the setting of realistic goals, my journey through the world of academia began.

Along the way there were times when I began to question whether my study would ever come to fruition but with determination, dedication and the endless support, encouragement and enthusiasm of Dr Lucy Akehurst and Dr Julie Cherryman, I eventually completed my journey.

My graduation day on 20th July 2007 will be a day that will remain with me forever. I cannot begin to describe the overwhelming pride I felt, not only on being presented with my MSc (with distinction) but on also being informed on the day that I was to receive ‘The Ray Bull Prize for the best project’. At last my dream had been realised, Sarah Manton MSc!
