Course overview

There are three separate stages in the postgraduate Coaching and Development programme and these are the Postgraduate Certificate (PgCert), Postgraduate Diploma (PgDip) and Master's (MSc). You can enter the programme at any stage relevant to your qualifications and experience. Completion of each stage enables you to continue to the next, with or without a break between each stage, but there is no obligation to do so.

The MSc Coaching and Development is aimed at leaders, managers and training professionals who want to develop their skills, knowledge and understanding in this rapidly developing field. Students may be seeking to use a coaching approach in a line management role, looking to build a coaching culture within their organisation to enhance performance or even embark on a second career as a professional freelance coach.

For further information, please contact our Admissions Team (details above). We also hold regular postgraduate and part-time open evenings at which you can see our facilities, enjoy a guest lecture and meet the academics and current students over drinks and canapés. Applicants will be interested to know that each year Portsmouth Business School offers a number of scholarships for self-funding students.

Course content

The University of Portsmouth will deliver research methods training through a combination of campus-delivered and distance learning to enable and support students to develop a research proposal (3,000 words) as the basis for completing a research-based Investigative Project/Dissertation (12,000 words).

Career prospects

Many of the current students are looking to develop their coaching skills in a line management role and some are seeking to embed a coaching culture in their organisation. Previous students have gone on to set up their own coaching companies and coach training organisations.

Pursuing an independent study project will allow students to develop research and analysis skills and allow them to pursue a topic of personal interest which may directly relate to future employment.
