  • Entry requirements for 2013 entry: A good honours degree or equivalent in a relevant subject. Other applicants may be admitted and will undertake a programme of preparatory reading and submit a written paper in order to confirm ability to study at postgraduate level.
  • IELTS score: English language proficiency at a minimum of IELTS band 6.5 or equivalent with no component less than 6.0.

Course overview

The course is designed to enable managers and would-be managers to gain new understanding, skills and confidence; to make informed judgements about their own professional activities; contribute to decision making processes and the formulation and implementation of policies and practices within the working environment. It is acknowledged that learning should be meaningful and professionally relevant, therefore the use of work related assignments are encouraged.

Available on a full or part time basis (one evening a week over two years), the programme is designed for managers or would-be managers from all areas of education and training to gain new understanding, skills and confidence.

Units include:

  • Education Policy, Strategy and Change
  • Management of People and Marketing in Public Organisations
  • Management of Resources, Finance and Information Systems
  • Research Methods in Education
  • Dissertation

Course content

All students must successfully complete a total of 7 assignments and submit a 12,000 - 15, 000 word Dissertation in order to attain the necessary 180 credits for the award of a Master of Science Degree. Students who have successfully submitted 4 assignments and attained 60 credits at MSc level may exit with a Postgraduate Certificate in Education and Training Management, or with a Diploma, providing they have successfully submitted a total of 7 assignments and attained 120 credits.

All Units are compulsory.

Teaching and assessment

Teaching methods include seminars, group work, lectures and student presentations. Students are encouraged to produce work related assignments, although this is not prescriptive if a student encounters difficulty in the work place or is a full time student. All students are allocated a Personal Tutor who will help the student to plan an appropriate course of study and research, discuss progress of work and advise how to construct the dissertation in terms of aims, scope and presentation.

The course is modularised and credit rated with continuous assessment (no examinations). The assessment process includes a formal presentation to peers.

Career prospects

The course is intended for teachers, trainers, lecturers and instructors in the state, private, public, commercial or voluntary sectors of education and training who aspire to senior management positions. Many graduates of the course attain senior management positions in education or training organisations.

Facilities and features

The Faculty is home to numerous postgraduate students following taught degrees (MA and MSc) and research students reading for MPhil or PhD degrees.

All our students are based in the University’s Guildhall Campus in the centre of Portsmouth, close to the library and other amenities. The Faculty provides a high quality interdisciplinary environment for study.
