Dr Becky Milne – Principal Lecturer for Interviewing and Testimony

"Throughout the professional world people interview others on a regular basis. Within the criminal justice system and in the broadest sense of the term, an interview concerns any interaction between two or more individuals that has a purpose of gathering information through communication. Thus within its broadest definition an interview can include anything from an initial meeting with a complainant, an interview with a witness or victim or suspect of crime, and so on... It is therefore imperative that the interviewing skills that legal practitioners utilise are ethical and produce the best quality and quantity of information from the interviewee they are communicating with."

Research and subject interests include information systems audits and fraud detection including: cyber crime, information risk and computer forensics.

"This unit examines the idea of, and formal definitions of, the developing concept of 'Cyber Crime'. Drawing upon a range of practical examples, we examine how rapid technological development and expansion in access to the Internet has impacted upon crime (e.g. example how anonymity and unfounded trust encourage deception), mapping out the terrain of information technology, and identifying the emerging areas of cyber crime.

"Areas explored will include the crossing of established boundaries into spaces over which control has already been established such as cyber-intrusion and cyber-theft, but also "new cyber crimes" in the form of virtual trespass, Denial of Service attacks, and the development of opportunities for offending in the context of social networking websites.

"Drawing upon a range of case studies, these will be applied to a range of regional and national initiatives in international legal and transnational policing contexts.

"A number of online debates - open to practitioners on similar units - will accompany this unit, to encourage further critical engagement with the issues, and link to contemporary real-world scenarios."

Research and subject interest include business financial crime, markets and financial institutions.

"As an accountant you are involved with every aspect of business and because of that you are ideally suited to move on into senior positions. I recently read an article that said that over 40% of senior executives in the FTSE 100 have a finance background.

"The most popular unit I teach on is Business Financial Crime. Not only is it practical for both managers and auditors, but the unit asks some really interesting questions which are worth studying in their own right. Why do people commit fraud? Is there a gender bias? How can organisation detect financial crime?"
