Overview

The University of Portsmouth Business School offers an MSc in Leadership and Management for large organisations based on a 'learning at work' approach. Attendance at the University is minimal, only requiring participants to attend course and module induction sessions and any necessary meetings agreed with your tutor.

The MSc has been mapped to specific Chartered Management Institute (CMI) and Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM) Level 7 and 8 courses, allowing successful participants to be eligible for Membership of the CMI and/or ILM, provided they demonstrate three years’ management experience, which is a requirement to join this course.

Support is provided by University tutors, a course management and administration team by telephone and email, and you will have access to the excellent University online support resources, including academic skills, library and the dedicated course website.

Accredited Prior Experience and Learning (APEL) based on rank

Based on the University’s experience of applications for APEL from Armed Forces personnel and established practice, serving officers of appropriate rank (see below) may apply for 120 M-level credits to join the programme and, on successful completion of a Research Methods module and an Integrative Project (dissertation) qualify for the award of MSc in Leadership and Management. The award of APEL is summarised as follows:

Master’s modules

Students will complete the Research Methods and Investigative Project module which is made up of two components: Research Methods and an Investigative Project (dissertation).

Both components must be successfully completed for the award of MSc Leadership and Management.

Research Methods will take approximately 12 weeks to complete and has two assessment elements designed to develop research capability. On successful completion of this module, course participants will progress to the Investigative Project - a research-based dissertation within the broad area of leadership and management. Course participants will be expected to carry out primary and secondary research as the basis of investigation into their specific area of interest. All Master’s students are allocated a dissertation supervisor who provides one-to-one support on an individual needs basis.
