MSc Risk Management
Darren Simpson - MSc Risk Management
Darren Simpson is an Information Security Specialist for an IT service provider. Before embarking on a Masters, Darren wondered whether he’d be able to manage combining study with a full-time job. Now in his second year, he’s enjoying the course so much he might even consider doing a PhD.
'I had reservations about my ability to study at first and wanted to ensure I was properly prepared for the challenge and could provide the necessary commitment, especially as I was going to be self-funding. A work colleague, who had previously studied at Portsmouth, suggested I visit the University and meet some of the staff to discuss the various courses on offer and what is expected at Master’s level. I attended an open evening and met with lecturer Dr Sara Thorne who talked to me in great detail and helped identify the right course.
My initial interest in risk management was primarily focused on the business continuity module since I had studied this topic before. However, the course literature and discussion with the course leader made me realise just how vast the scale of subject matter is. The breadth and depth of the course really exceeded all expectations and has encouraged me to research certain aspects of risk management even further.
The Business School has provided me with knowledge and skills you don’t gain from popular industry-based courses. It has also given me the confidence to question the validity of some practises and procedures currently employed at some of our client’s sites, and to offer alternative solutions where available. The additional research skills taught throughout the course have also enabled me to critically evaluate recommendations made by third parties to ensure our clients are given the best possible advice.
The Business School and its facilities are excellent; the classrooms are modern and utilise all the latest technologies to guarantee a successful learning experience for all students. The staff I have met are extremely knowledgeable and always prepared to put in the time and effort necessary to ensure students have a rewarding and enjoyable time at university.'
