PgCert Occupational Health and Safety Management

Although I am not the first Azerbaijani to choose the Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) Management course, similarly I was not swayed by peer pressure to select the University of Portsmouth distance learning programme. My colleagues (both local and foreign) whom had successfully completed the course, had advised me that it was a lifestyle altering activity that, despite the intrusion, was worth the effort.
Independently I conducted research into the various distance learning opportunities that were available in relation to OH&S. I wanted a programme that could develop my knowledge, already being a qualified medical practitioner and engaged in Occupational and Industrial Health activities in my professional activities. I required a course that would permit me to continue with my work activities and could be incorporated into my non-work schedule. The University of Portsmouth offered the best programme in terms of syllabus and recognition, along with the flexibility I required.
Although initially intimidated by the impression created by my colleagues who had completed the course, I soon realised that success was achievable. Having completed approximately three quarters of the course work I appreciate that the study regime was not only a worthwhile academic pursuit but also of immediate benefit to my professional skills and daily working challenges.
The study challenge was assisted tremendously by a supportive manager and work team. The work load was as all-consuming at times as I had been told, but the stimulus and additional competencies it has provided have been well worth the energy and time.
I would also give recognition and gratitude for the support provided by the academic and administrative personnel of the University.
I would encourage anyone, either with or without native English language skills to look at the University of Portsmouth for distance learning. My experience has been immediately beneficial both in terms of course content and the prestige associated with the University. It has increased my professionalism and my credibility, which I trust will only aid me in the further development of my career.

I think it's fair to say I'm not your average distance learning student; my work involves only around 25 per cent H&S and I actually work at the University. However, I principally chose the CCEPD for my studies due to the excellent reputation the staff have for supporting their distance learning students both within the campus and in the wider community. I have to admit being based locally also made it easier for me sitting the exams!
The course has been interesting, challenging and invaluable in the way I have shaped my working practices and those of my team. The materials provided at each stage have been well laid out and presented in an easy to follow fashion. Information is regularly received via the web; this also allows interaction with other students on the course which is something which has seen me through some difficult times.
I chose the distance learning route as it allowed me to be flexible and continue my studies around my current employment. Having only studied 'conventional' classroom-based courses before I have found the pace to be both intense and demanding at times. Because of this I have also learned a great deal about myself and my preferred learning/working styles and ultimately better time management, all skills which have transferred well into the workplace. Feedback for coursework has always been timely, giving clear direction if any improvement is needed. This in itself has had a monumental impact on the development of my own writing style.
If you are prepared for the hard work needed to complete this course and have the self motivation to push on with your studies even when the sun is shining and you'd rather be down the beach, the sheer amount of information to be learnt and personal development on offer far exceeds what is written in any prospectus.
