Course overview

This Bachelor of Arts degree focuses on the development of knowledge and understanding in the broad field of education and training, and addresses current debates and issues in this dynamic field. It is intended for people who are currently working in an education or training environment (including early years practitioners, teaching assistants in schools and colleges, naval, police, health educators, further and adult education tutors, as well as those who work in the field of education administration), who want to develop their knowledge and understanding of this multi-disciplinary sector.

The degree has two entry routes:

1. Two year, part time direct entry progression for those who have already completed levels four and five through a Foundation degree (or equivalent) who require HE level six credits to achieve a BA honours degree.

Example of Foundation degrees for direct entry: Early Years, Learning Support, Working with Young People, Education Administration. HND Childhood Studies would also be considered.

2. Three year, part time direct entry for those working in an education or training setting who have completed a Certificate in Education for Post Compulsory Education (or equivalent HE credits) who require 60 HE level five credits and 120 HE level six credits to achieve a BA honours degree.

Course content

Two year, part time programme

The course runs over two years with the following units:

Year one (HE level six)

Education and Society (20 credits): this unit looks at historical, political, economic and social issues informing educational and training provision and policies.

Mentoring and Leadership (20 credits): this unit will explore issues relating to mentoring and coaching young people and adults in educational settings and the role of leadership in small group settings.

Research Methods and Dissertation Proposal (20 credits): in preparation for your dissertation you will explore a range of approaches applicable to small-scale research. This will include the structure and development of social research from defining the scope of the investigation and the methodological approach, through to the stages of data collection and analysis.

Year two (HE level six)

Global Perspectives on Education (20 credits): this unit will review issues associated with changing and developing aspects of international influence on pedagogy, policy and practice.

Dissertation (40 credits): this unit provides the opportunity to investigate an area of personal interest in the fields of education, training or administration. You will agree with your tutor the area you wish to investigate in your dissertation proposal. The focus of this unit is on the investigation and production of a small scale research project (10,000 words).

Three year, part time programme

The programme runs over three years with the following units:

Year one (HE level five)

Reflective Review (20 credits): this unit encourages students to reflect on their personal learning development and locate their personal professional practice within the context of current national education and training polices.

Introduction to Literature Enquiry (20 credits): this unit explores the selection and analysis of source material and how it is used to inform thinking and scholarship.

Psychology in Education (20 credits): this unit invites students to reflect on the processes of applying psychological principles of learning in their professional practice.

Years two and three (HE level six)

Follows the same structure as the two-year programme.

Teaching and assessment

You will be taught in a variety of ways. Lectures will provide you with a basic grounding in a particular topic or issue; these will be supported by audio and visual materials. Seminar sessions will be used to explore issues in greater depth, discuss ideas and exchange views. Regular small group or one-to-one tutorials will be used to facilitate independent learning.

You will be required to complete essays, reports, presentations and a dissertation. We provide clear assessment criteria for all coursework assignments, which are always made known to you so that you can appreciate the criteria used to evaluate your work. All assessment is through coursework assignments.

Career prospects

Students on this degree programme are generally studying as part of their careers in education and training environments. The course provides the analytical skills, transferable thinking skills, and the confidence that comes from completing a degree.
