BA (Hons) Human Geography

Student profile

Mark Holton – BA (Hons) Human Geography

I have a different story to most students who come here in that I already had a long and fulfilling career before I started at the University of Portsmouth. I never thought it would be possible to put everything on hold in my thirties and embark on a new start at university but the opportunity arose and it has been the best decision of my life.

Doing this degree has given me a huge amount of confidence and the drive and ambition to keep learning. A degree in geography will open many doors as it gives a broad range of knowledge that can be practically applied in the workplace. I am keen to continue into postgraduate study, specialising in urban geography. Once I have finished, I would like to pursue a career in environmental management in an urban capacity.

When I was searching for a place to study, Portsmouth jumped out in the range of courses available and the way in which the University presents itself. I love the fact that the University is spread across the city, it really makes you feel like you are in a cosmopolitan place rather than just a campus.

As a discipline, human geography is interesting in that it offers up-to-the-minute academic study while opening your eyes to how and why contemporary society is shaped. In year one, the ‘Portsmouth, its History and Region’ unit is a must. The lecturers’ knowledge of this area is unparalleled and the field trips to Southsea castle and the submarine museum in Gosport were outstanding. In year two, the European field class trip is a definite highlight. Not only did we get the opportunity to put much of the theory we had worked through into practice, but we also got to spend time in Barcelona, a funky city.

In general, the facilities that the University of Portsmouth offers are great. The Library is vast and well stocked, with plenty of areas for both quiet and group study. We also have access to a huge range of up-to-date online journal articles and papers. In addition, there is plenty of computer access around the Department of Geography, including new bookable study rooms.

The support network at the University of Portsmouth is fantastic. In year one, we were introduced to the Academic Skills unit (ASK). This is the place to find help to develop the necessary skills to think and write academically. Now that I am nearing the end of my degree, I am taking advantage of the Purple Door workshops and advisory sessions. These are helping me pave the way towards a future career. Purple Door also offers support in tidying up all of the bits in-between, such as interview skills and CV writing and advice on the practicalities of postgraduate study.

In my spare time, I act and direct plays with a local amateur dramatics society, where I am also a committee member and the group’s publicity officer. I recently directed a play which won ‘best youth play’ at a drama festival in Middlesex.

Although I do not live in Portsmouth during term time, I have really enjoyed my time here. The city offers a varied mix of nightlife, especially live music, both in the city centre and at Gunwharf Quays. As time has gone on, my friends have chosen to spend more time in the city outside of term time, which is testament to how superb Portsmouth is.

Jemma Everly – BA (Hons) Human Geography

I chose the course because it offered me the chance to study the environment and how it is affected by economic, political, social and cultural issues.

The facilities and resources in the Department are very good. The staff have also been excellent, they are very friendly and always willing to help. I am really enjoying my life in Portsmouth. There is something for everyone. I particularly like shopping and spending nights out in Gunwharf. Portsmouth really has a lot to offer.

I like it so much I have decided to complete my PGCE here and I am hoping to stay on after.
