- Entry requirements 2013: 240 HE credits from University of Portsmouth Foundation Degree in Business and Management or Leadership and Management, or 240 HE credits from a similar Business qualification which may be subject to both conditions and a satisfactory interview. If appropriate, prior learning may be assessed and accredited in accordance with University policy, which includes the setting of a time limit (normally 5 years) to ensure currency. Students should be employed in a role that offers appropriate opportunities for undertaking the work based learning units.

If you have 240 higher education credits from the Foundation Degree in Business and Management or the Foundation Degree in Leadership and Management at the University of Portsmouth or elsewhere, or a similar business degree course, you can gain an honours degree within 18 months that will equip you with the knowledge and skills to enhance your career development.
This nationally recognised academic qualification is delivered in partnership with you and your employer. Incorporating elements of your work into your learning, it will cause as little disruption as possible to your employment and help you to make a more effective contribution to your organisation, as well as improve your career prospects.

Year one, term one
You will study a range of subjects including:
Contemporary Issues in Business explores a range of contemporary business issues. These may change from year to year and have previously included: cybercrime, bullying at work, risk management, the effects of alcohol abuse on business, and sustainability.
Strategic Management investigates the main factors that influence the strategic decision-making process in organisations. Topics covered include: strategic management, contemporary patterns and processes of strategic management, strategic analysis and strategy formulation, theories and frameworks for analysing organisations' environments, stakeholder expectations, and managing strategic change.
The Intrapreneur/Systems Thinker, delivered fully online, will enable you to undertake a systematic review of your own or another organisation. You will be introduced to systems thinking, analysis and modelling techniques, as well as change management, processes, creative thinking, facilitation, and the role of the intrapreneur.
Year one, term two
Business Research Methods is designed to give you an appreciation of various research methods so that you can design a sound proposal for your research/dissertation. This unit covers philosophical foundations of research, choice of perspectives, methodologies and methods, accessing and reviewing literature, using appropriate sources, planning and management, ethics, research design and data collection, and analysis.
Management Futures explores key issues in contemporary management theory and practice. Topics may change year on year, but generally fall into three categories: society, technology, and innovation. Past topics have included consumerism, work and family, lifestyles, and globalisation.
Business Improvement and Creativity identifies key issues in how organisations plan for and make improvements. This unit will provide you with an insight into business improvement techniques and the ability to apply these techniques to new theoretical situations.
Research project
Finally, you will undertake a substantial research project (10,000-word dissertation) on a business topic of your own choosing. It will provide a unique opportunity for you to demonstrate the subject knowledge you have acquired, as well as your analytical abilities and problem-solving skills – skills that are highly regarded by potential employers. During this phase your research will be supervised by an individually allocated, experienced academic with expertise in your chosen topic area.
Teaching and assessment
Here at Portsmouth our approach to learning is friendly, supportive and participative. You will benefit from the diversity of students on the course, who come from many different business backgrounds, bringing a wealth of knowledge and experience to share with each other. Attendance is a regular three-hour session one evening per week, with some additional tutorials and an annual business conference.
We employ a range of teaching methods including seminars, workshops and work-based learning. You will also be required to spend time reading around the lecture material and undertaking self-directed learning. Learning is assessed by a combination of exams, presentations and coursework assignments.

The BA (Hons) Leadership, Business and Management is ideally suited as an early career step into a wide range of management roles and responsibilities. Facilities and features

Open from 8am until midnight every day during term-time, it provides an abundance of information to help with study and research.
