BA (Hons) Politics
Aoife Crowley - BA (Hons) Politics
I chose to come to the University of Portsmouth because it is close to home and easy for me to go back for the weekend if I feel like it. I am really glad that I came to one of the Open days. It helped me to make up my mind about coming to study at Portsmouth.
I had never studied Politics before A-Level but I really enjoyed the course. So when it came to choosing a course at University, I decided to study Politics. At the time, I did not know what I would do after University. Now I know that, after graduation, I would like to continue studying Politics at a higher level.
I like having so much choice about the units that I study. The options offered come from different departments within the University and we mix with students studying courses other than Politics. I enjoy studying units which look at both the historical and philosophical theory behind politics and then, applying these theories to the political world today.
The facilities in the University are really good. There are always computers available in all the University buildings, with IT support services available in each computer room. The Library has many librarians to help you find books and information on a variety of subjects. Lecturers and tutors have office hours every week and you can make regular appointments to discuss any issues with them, including planning your work and essay feedback. I have also used the services provided by the Academic Skills Department to help me improving my essay writing skills.
I really enjoy living in Portsmouth because it is on the coast. There are many bars and restaurants around the city to meet friends. Gunwharf Quays, so close to the University, is great for shopping and eating out.
Antony Innes - BA (Hons) Politics
The course is great. I have learnt a great deal and have developed as an academic and as a person. The lecturers are really approachable. As well as being experts in their fields, they show a lot of passion for their subject, which makes the learning process more interesting as well as easier. The support facilities around the University are also very helpful.
The Academic Skills Unit helped me to get to grips with the system used when submitting academic essays and projects. Portsmouth is the best choice for me, the course suits all my needs and it’s a wonderful city, full of friendly people.
Mark Newton - BA (Hons) Politics
I chose the BA (Hons) Politics course because I wanted a challenge and felt that politics was an important and relevant subject. I feel that the two years I have spent here have helped me gain an understanding of the political influences behind international events.
I also now have a more thorough understanding of the local, national and international institutions that affect people's lives. I have especially enjoyed looking at British Government and European governance. After graduation, I hope to work in local government.
