BSc (Hons) Business Information Systems
Kamaldeep Lakhpuri - BSc (Hons) Business Information Systems
I chose the University of Portsmouth, not just because I could commute from home in Southampton, but mainly because I liked the structure of the course. The varied subjects appealed to me, and I have certainly not been disappointed.
The BSc (Hons) Business Information Systems course is challenging, interlinking business and IT. I have particularly enjoyed my year in industry with a large pharmaceutical company as an IT analyst for clinical trials. The role involved not only supporting the hardware and software for the company, but ensuring compliance with government, industry and corporate regulations.
I like the area, as Southampton is my hometown, and after graduation, I intend to stay around to complete a Master's degree.
Nathan Windle – BSc (Hons) Business Information Systems
I chose the BSc (Hons) Business Information Systems, for its blend of advanced topics in information systems, where I could use my previous experience as a Systems Developer and Consultant to model the theory taught on the course. In addition, I was able to build upon my practical skills, incorporating the latest technologies and techniques used in industry.
My placement year was at a small company called Clevertouch Marketing, joining as their fifth employee. Working for a small company was stimulating, as it provided a diverse working environment that gave me valuable work experience in a wide range of areas. This opportunity also allowed me to work with industry professionals on a daily basis, providing me with great networking opportunities.
The job was aligned with the knowledge gained from years one and two of my course, therefore I felt comfortable stepping into this role. Furthermore, I have secured a job with this company for when I graduate, so I fully recommend a placement year to potential students.
The combined successes of my placement and studies lead me to:
- Have a solid understanding of systems analysis and design, from conceptualisation through to systems development.
- Secure a first class honours degree.
- New techniques, tools and ideas that were an asset in year three.
- Decide and be confident with a dissertation topic that was an idea derived from my placement at Clevertouch.
This made the final-year project more rewarding, as the end result would be useful in my graduate role at Clevertouch Marketing.
