BSc (Hons) Geological Hazards
Student profile
Rebecca Wallace – BSc (Hons) Geological Hazards
Year: 3
What made you decide to come to University of Portsmouth to study?
Geological Hazards is a very specialised course and there were only a few universities offering it which limited my field when applying. However, after visiting the Open Days of my two particular choices, I felt Portsmouth suited me better. Like anybody, I wanted a university that offered me everything I needed; this included all possible amenities within walking distance but open space and somewhere to escape to when you need to be on your own, and of course, the degree you are interested in studying. The degree was just what I was looking for but I particularly loved the 'young people' feel to Portsmouth.
How have you found your course?
I was only really interested in learning more about volcanoes and earthquakes when I started and I didn't realise how many other areas of expertise were related to this subject. I was admittedly reluctant at first, but then discovered the usefulness of having this extra knowledge. Also, all of the lecturers are extremely approachable, and I found this particularly helpful during my first year. Overall, I have really enjoyed the course, the resources offered are excellent and the field trips are great fun!
How have you found life at the University?
Moving away from home can be difficult for most people. I had trouble settling at first, but when you start making friends and you get to know your lecturers, you find there are so many people who will listen to you moan about missing home, and it helps. When you realise all the different opportunities there are and then you discover the nightlife, you find a year has passed and you can't wait to tackle whatever they throw at you next! I have grown to really like Portsmouth and I have made so many friends that I will keep for life.

Tim 'Teddy' Over – BSc (Hons) Geological Hazards
My course is informative and interesting, the staff are approachable and friendly and the field trips are especially great.
IT access is excellent and there is never any problem getting whatever resource you need, whether it be maps, aerial photos, journals etc.
On the informal side, I play a key role in the University Cricket Club. This is my first year on the committee and I am looking forward to running for president in my third year. I am also a member of the Ski and Snowboard club.
I have made some great mates here who I will definitely stay in touch with after graduation.
