BSc (Hons) Geology

Daniel Pedrosa – BSc (Hons) Geology

I decided to come to Portsmouth because I loved the city. It is right by the sea and has certain “freshness” to it. I also liked the fact that the University of Portsmouth had many opportunities for geology field trips, with the Isle of Wight and its exposed geology a stone’s throw away.

I chose the BSc (Hons) Geology course because I was interested in getting into the petroleum industry, but not in the sense of marketing/sales. I actually want to find oil/gas stores hiding beneath Earth’s surface. After graduation, I plan to do a Masters course in petroleum geosciences, which should help me get a good job involving a lot of travelling!

I like the course because there are many free field trips. I especially like the Petrology unit, where you look at rocks in thin section down a microscope. It may seem a bit weird, but you would be surprised about what rocks look like close!

The facilities are great. We have a massive modern Library right next to the Students Union, so after a few hard hours of revision you can stroll over and have a pint. All the departments have computing facilities so you do not really have any trouble trying to find a computer to use.

I have had a lot of help from the Student Finance and the Academic Skills (ASK) departments during my time here at Portsmouth. They have been great. The department arranged for ASK to come in now and again to help us with writing scientific reports and referencing.

The best thing about Portsmouth is that it is right next to the sea. Whenever you feel like taking a walk along the seafront, it is only a 10-15 minute walk away. Outside of lectures, I tend to spend most of my time watching football down the pub, and on the odd occasion playing it myself. Portsmouth has also Gunwharf Quays, an outdoors shopping centre with loads of shops and restaurants right by the sea, so is ideal for days out.

What made you decide to come to University of Portsmouth to study?

'It had a really friendly atmosphere when I visited and I had also heard a good review of the University and the geology department. All in all it sounded like a good place to study.'

How have you found your course?

'There's a lot to take in to start with, but the learning is set out very well and support is given all of the time. Resources are excellent and readily available. The friendly staff are always approachable and willing to help.'

How have you found life at the University?

'There is a wide range of things to do when not studying. The nightlife is good. The Union is the centre of most students nights out but I like to get out to all the other attractions/pubs/clubs that Portsmouth has to offer - and there is no shortage of them. The location is good for getting out and about with trains to most wanted locations. Sport activities offered are excellent.'
