BSc (Hons) Marine Biology
BSc (Hons) Marine Biology

I have always loved TV documentaries like ‘The Blue Planet’ and enjoyed studying biology, so the BSc (Hons) Marine Biology seemed the right course for me. When I visited Portsmouth on an Open Day, the Marine Biology department and its staff were brilliant. There is also a well-renowned student support system and all the students I met were full of praise for the University.
My course is a constant challenge. Students are expected to acquire an in-depth understanding of Marine Biology as well as working out things ourselves, instead of just being able to recite information. I have a Personal Tutor who helps me with exam and essay worries, and points me in the right direction if I need specialist knowledge. After graduation, I would like to move somewhere warm and ideally, get a good job in conservation or maybe study a Masters degree.
The University facilities are brilliant, especially the labs. Some of the instruments we get to use are amazing. The Library catalogue is extensive, allowing me to access journals from, for instance, the 1950s, which is wicked, and there is always a helpful hand around. The Students Union is great: cheap drinks, live music and good food.
I play rugby and volleyball, which have a fantastic social aspect. The regular matches are always a ball (excuse the awful pun). In addition, I am looking forward to the surfing trip to Newquay, which I am sure will be epic.
The best thing about living in Portsmouth is the proximity to the sea. I come from a coastal town and it is wicked to still have the sea so close by if I ever fancy a dip when it isn’t too cold.

I came to see the University of Portsmouth on a Preview Day and really liked it, especially the laboratories at the Department of Biology. The campus was in a good location and there was loads of nightlife and activities.
The BSc (Hons) Marine Biology is a good course. The Departmental staff are friendly and the resources are superb. The University offers a wide array of learning and support facilities. And the Students Union has many clubs and societies, ranging from 'Bouncy Castle Club' to 'Band Club'.
While at university, I have met the greatest friends I have ever, ever had. The nightlife is fantastic, the clubs have loads of different themed nights.

I have enjoyed nearly all aspects of the course and especially the friendliness of the staff. The lecturers seem really switched on to what the students are keen to learn.
When I first arrived I was amazed at the facilities and resources that were available the University Library is larger than my home town's main library! I’ve been able to find everything I’ve needed for my course.
I liked it so much that I decided to stay on and do my postgraduate course here. What I enjoy most is the diversity of the people at the University I’ve made some really great friends.
