BSc (Hons) Product Design and Innovation

Lizzie Gillis

Lizzie GillisI chose the University of Portsmouth because when I came to visit I really liked it, especially the location by the sea. I decided to study the BA (Hons) Product Design course because I took product design at A-levels and very much enjoyed it. I was interested in taking it further. After graduation, I hope to have a career in design.

The units in my course are varied and I have had the opportunity to learn about all different areas of design. The units I took in my first two years will certainly help with my final year project. I am currently making a portfolio, which I can use for interviews, and it is fun going through all my old work, finding suitable things to put in it.

I tend to spend a lot of time in the University Library as I like the atmosphere there. There are plenty of computers and it is quiet enough to get work done. In addition, we just have brand new computers installed in some of the rooms in my building, where I have most of my lectures. I have plenty of support when it comes to work. All the lecturers are willing to spend time with you to explain things, or look at work you have done and give advice.

I did not join any of the University societies when I came to Portsmouth and I have spent a lot time with friends. Southsea Common is a great place in summer. There are so many bars and clubs it’s hard to get bored.

I love Portsmouth and I am going to be sad to leave. The shopping is good, with Gunwharf Quays and town. I like that you can walk everywhere because nothing is too far away.

Hayley Yorke - BSc (Hons) Product Design and Innovation

Hayley YorkeI am really enjoying my course and particularly like using my design skills to apply technology in a creative way. The staff here are great, they are always helpful and informative and the Department has some great resources.

We use the latest CAD equipment and have access to labs and computers suites (which are never crowded).

The support facilities are numerous; there is always someone to help whatever you are after. I am new to the area and loving it here. I think Portsmouth is ideally situated (being by the sea) and it has such an interesting variety of things to do and see.
