BSc (Hons) Psychology

Philip Williamson

Philip WilliamsonI chose the University of Portsmouth because of the amazing courses on offer and the compactness of the city, which meant I could walk anywhere, yet I have still not seen everywhere within Portsmouth. I also enjoy water sports and being right on the hub of one of the busiest water areas in the UK meant that I could have my own choice of what I wanted to do.

I chose this subject because psychology has always fascinated me, since I like to know what makes people tick and why they do what they do. The University also houses the International Forensic Psychology Centre, which means that I can learn more from people who have actually been working in this sector of psychology and have a wealth of experience. After graduation, I plan to train in forensic or education psychology. I want to work with people with special needs or disabilities that have put them at a disadvantage to the rest of the population.

The course offers the opportunity to talk to some of the top psychologists in the field and there are regular lectures with guest speakers. If you want to get involved with an area of psychology, it is easy to talk to your tutor or lecturer and then learn more about how your chosen field of psychology works.

The Psychology Department has its own computer laboratory, with technicians on hand all day to help. There are also several different labs for specific testing of participants in studies such as the neuro-psych room, the mother and infant room, the colour lab and many more. Each one has its own equipment and is always available to students if they wish to book it.

I am the vice-president of the University Boxing club, which is the most successful club at the University. It is also one of the most successful university boxing clubs in the country. I am also a member of the University Windsurfing club, which regularly meets to go windsurfing and caters for all abilities.

I like the city of Portsmouth because everything is close and it is easy to walk almost anywhere. It is also very cheap to get a taxi after a night out.

Laika Suleyman - BSc (Hons) Psychology

Laika Suleyman The Departmental staff are all really friendly and approachable and they make a big effort to make lectures enjoyable and interesting.

The facilities at the University are really good. There are all kinds of study groups to help you with your course work.

The University also has a great student atmosphere. I have found Portsmouth to be the perfect balance between city and campus. There's something to do every night of the week.

I’ve been here for four years now and I am still not ready to leave.

Name: John Appiah
Course: BSc (Hons) Psychology

John Appiah is in his final year of psychology. “I'm a socially inquisitive person which is why I was drawn to psychology and I'm studying it here because I was attracted by the quality of the teaching."

"The vocational elements of the course are really interesting, such as the occupational choice unit, which covers the psychology behind employment assessment centres and the ways in which psychology can be used to make yourself more marketable. I would love to work with young offenders when I've graduated.”
