BSc (Hons) Software Engineering

Student profile

Chris Smith – BSc (Hons) Software Engineering

'As a mature student with a family I had many factors to consider which may be different from those of a young student having just completed A Levels. Although reluctant, I was prepared to move if necessary to find the right course for me.

I was attracted to the University of Portsmouth by the news of a new degree stream starting in software engineering. Having read the Prospectus I was pleased to find that the course was ideally suited to my requirements, meaning I would not have to move away from the family home.

I have found the BSc (Hons) Software Engineering course to be a well-balanced mix of theoretical and practical units. While I am more comfortable in practical units the course has helped me develop a good understanding of the theoretical aspects of software engineering.

I think that teaching standards on the course are very good and have always found that lecturers take a genuine interest in the progress of their students. They are usually happy to take time to assist students who may have difficulty with particular concepts. The course units are constantly being improved each year and students are encouraged to give feedback and suggestions.

Life here at the University is great. There is a friendly atmosphere with both students and staff. There is always plenty to do from a social perspective. The Student's Union promotes many clubs covering a wide range of activities both sporting and non-sporting.

For the last four years I have acted in the role of Student Representative which has given me the opportunity to raise a number of issues put forward by my peers to improve the experience of being a student at Portsmouth.'
