Course overview

Why choose a Foundation degree in Leadership and Management?

In recent years, there has been an increasing emphasis on leadership as well as management. Organisations such as the Management Standards Centre and the Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM) recognise that without effective leadership, management lacks purpose and that without effective management, leadership will fail.

In today’s complex global environment, therefore, organisations require good managers who are also effective leaders.  If you aspire to becoming an effective leader and manager, then this course will help you to progress in your chosen career.

The underlying ethos of the course is 'leading from the inside out'. It includes the opportunity for both professional and personal development through an integrated structure and you will also receive ILM professional accreditation in addition to your degree on successful completion of the course.

You will need to be in full or part-time employment in either the public, private or voluntary sectors and it is preferable that your employer supports you in your programme of study. However, the most important thing is that your employment provides you with an environment in which you can carry out your work-based learning and assignments.

The University of Portsmouth Business School has a long and well-respected history of offering business and management degrees and the Foundation degree in Leadership and Management has been developed to meet increasing demand for effective leaders and managers in the workplace. We have links with business-related professional bodies such as the Institute of Leadership and Management, the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, the accounting professions, the Law Society, and the Chartered Institute of Marketing among others. You will be taught by enthusiastic staff who have specialist knowledge, expertise and experience.

Course content

The Foundation degree in Leadership and Management has been developed on the underlying ethos of 'leading from the inside out' – that is, you can only be an effective leader of others if you can effectively lead and manage yourself. The course structure, therefore, starts with a focus upon your personal leadership qualities and skills and moves through the leading and managing of other people to, finally, leading and managing an organisation.

The main themes are:

Year one: Leading Oneself

Year two: Leading Others

Year three: Leading Organisations

Career prospects

Progressing in your current career

The course has been designed in conjunction with employers to meet the needs of those in work who want to prepare themselves for taking on a more responsible role in the workplace and therefore obtaining a Foundation degree in Leadership and Management will undoubtedly help you to progress in your chosen career. It includes the opportunity to define work-related projects, which may be new opportunities, or projects that you are currently working on.

Professional accreditation with the Institute of Leadership and Management

Whilst studying for the Foundation degree, you will automatically be entitled to studying membership of the ILM; upon successful completion, you will be entitled to professional qualification for the ILM Level 5 Diploma in Leadership and Management.

Gaining further academic qualifications

Foundation degrees are equivalent to the first two years of a degree-level course with a higher proportion of work-based learning than you would find in a traditional honours degree. Successful completion of the Foundation degree will enable you to go onto the final year of an honours degree – BA (Hons) Leadership, Business and Management – and, should you wish to progress through to postgraduate study, Portsmouth Business School also offer a wide range of postgraduate courses.

Facilities and features

We offer a wide range of support, expertise and facilities, aimed at helping you get the most from your time as a student at the University. The University Library is at the centre of academic life. Open from 8am until midnight every day during term-time, it provides an abundance of information to help with study and research.

The Library has also invested heavily in the purchase of electronic resources. There are thousands of electronic journals and ebooks, which can be accessed from anywhere with an internet connection.

All students have a network account giving access to a range of course-specific resources.
