Students who wish to continue to work during this programme must have written confirmation from their employer that they are able to attend the programme.

Part time (one day per week) – February to July (23 weeks)

This programme is designed to prepare students for progression to the full-time BSc (Hons) Dental Hygiene and Dental Therapy. It does not in itself lead to a recognised academic award, but successful students will be guaranteed a place on the BSc (Hons) Dental Hygiene and Dental Therapy, provided they fulfil our progression criteria.

Students will not be required to pay tuition fees.

Our courses are validated by the University of Portsmouth and accredited by the General Dental Council.

Course content

Students on this programme will study a range of units including:

  • Introduction to Personal and Professional Learning
  • Human Anatomy and Physiology
  • Oral Anatomy and Physiology
  • Reading and Critiquing Professional Literature

A diverse range of learning and teaching processes will be adopted including lectures, group work, library visits, a visit to Guy’s Pathology Museum and independent study.

Each unit of study will be assessed using a range of methods including examination, written assessment and reflective reports. Academic assessments are marked in accordance with the Universities and Schools marking policy. A pass grade in each unit will be needed for progression to the BSc (Hons) Dental Hygiene and Dental Therapy.

Career prospects

Successful completion of the Foundation Award in Science and Dental Therapy leads to a place on the BSc (Hons) Dental Hygiene and Dental Therapy.

Facilities and features

The Dental Academy also provides dental training for undergraduate King’s College London Dental Institute students. Joint training for dental care professionals and undergraduate dentists will take place under the same roof to develop the concept of a dental team working within a primary dental care setting.

Our programmes are delivered in recently expanded purpose built clinical and academic facilities. The building includes two clinics (44 dental treatment bays), two individual surgeries, a phantom head room, radiography suite, four radiography booths and excellent teaching rooms.

Students also have access to resources within the Faculty of Science and to the University Library, student advice services, sports facilities and the Students’ Union.

The School does not offer shortened courses for applicants with dental hygiene, dental therapy or dental qualifications gained overseas.
