What is a degree apprenticeship?
Degree apprenticeships allow you to study for a full university honours degree while working. This means you will earn a salary while you study.
You will not need a student loan to fund your course, because the Government and your employer pay your tuition fees.
Why take this course?
As well as giving you experience in the workplace, this degree apprenticeship allows you to apply what you learn at the University to real-life situations. You will also develop core skills in leadership, project management and problem solving. The course includes online and University-based learning.
You will enjoy all the advantages of being a student at the University of Portsmouth, including complete access to library, study support, sports and recreation facilities, and the Students’ Union.
You do not need to pay tuition fees because the Government and your employer cover the cost of your study. You will earn a salary from your employer while you study.

The course fee is shared between the Government and some employers, meaning no cost to you as the degree apprentice. Total tuition fee is £9,000 paid over one year.

Structure & Teaching
You will study 4 core units that will develop your skills and in-depth understanding in major subjects in Electronic Engineering. You will also have the opportunity to work on an individual project that you will complete in your place of work.

Teaching and Assessment
The course takes 1 academic year to complete. It is based on attendance of 1 day a week with the occasional need to be on campus for 2 days a week. Teaching is a combination of lectures and tutorials. Units are also supported by practical laboratory sessions.

The units are assessed with a variety of methods, including:

The top-up degree apprenticeship is designed to enable you to significantly enhance your engineering career and sets you on the right pathway to achieving Professional Engineering status. This degree programme is designed to give you the opportunity to gain the current knowledge, skills and know-how required by industry. The modern teaching techniques used to deliver the material makes learning both interesting and enjoyable. The flexibility of this programme will allow you to undertake your individual project at your place of work which means you can continue to add value to your employer while you learn.
Facilities & Features
We have a wide range of modern facilities in our Analogue and Digital Electronics Engineering Laboratory and our Telecommunications and Signal Processing Laboratory. Both labs are fully equipped with industry-standard experimental and computational hardware and software, including radio receivers, walking robots and advanced digital signal processing (DSP) kits.
Drop in any time and get one-to-one help with that tricky maths or stats problem. With handouts on key topics to take away and computer-aided learning packages, we can get the problem solved and help you improve your numeracy skills.
Modern, comfortable and a great learning environment, our library offers 400,000 books, DVDs, maps and thousands of online ejournals and newspapers. Many electronic resources are available anywhere, 24/7 and our friendly staff are always on hand to help.
The labs are well equipped and maintained, plus the lab technicians are extremely helpful.

Budgeting for your studies
There are extra costs associated with studying, which you will need to consider when planning your expenditure.
If you wish to purchase recommended texts, rather than borrow from the University Library, the average price is £50-£60. You may be studying up to 6 units a year, each with a standard recommended text.
We recommend that you budget £75 a year for costs of photocopying, memory sticks, DVDs and CDs, printing charges, binding and specialist printing.
Final year project:
If your final year includes a major project, there could be cost for transport or accommodation related to your research activities. The amount will depend on the project you choose to develop.
Other costs to consider
You will be required to pay a registration fee at the start of your course to The Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET). This will be approximately £50. Please see http://www.theiet.org/membership/types/fees/index.cfm
