As one of the most diverse of the engineering professions, you’ll be designing, developing and manufacturing, while experimenting with today’s most innovative technologies.
This course is designed to develop your technical competence and engineering knowledge while easily fitting around your current work constraints.

What opportunities might it lead to?
This course puts you in an excellent position to start a career as a professional engineer in areas as diverse as consumer product design, robotics, defence or aerospace engineering. It also meets the requirements of many of the major engineering graduate programmes and provides a route to postgraduate study at Portsmouth or academic institutions elsewhere.

Structure & Teaching
You will begin the course with the foundations of engineering science and engineering design, including some computer-aided design. As your knowledge develops, you’ll move on to more in-depth study covering topics such as instrumentation, computer-aided design and product modelling.
Core units in the first year include:
- Computer Aided Engineering
- Mechanical Behaviour of Materials
- Engineering Systems
- Manufacturing Systems
- Strategies for Resource Conservation and Management
- Project Management
- Quality Management
- Design
In your final year you will cover solid materials, manufacturing systems and CAE (product realisation). There is also a range of topics for you to tailor your studies as well as an individual project, working on your own design, make and test activity.
Teaching and Assessment
Most of the course is delivered via our interactive virtual learning environment. With access to all the study material you’ll need, discussion forums and the chance to connect with peers and lecturers via chat sessions, you’ll have plenty of academic support and heaps of resources. If you are studying alongside work, then you can also receive ongoing guidance from a University-approved mentor.

Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering
We will equip you with the knowledge and skills you need to create effective and innovative products for suitable and profitable manufacture. Starting at the drawing board, we will take you through modern workshop activities, mastering mechanical engineering technology and science involving state-of-the-art CAD/CAM systems and rapid manufacture facilities.

Flexible Learning
Although you may not be campus based, you will still benefit from web, email or phone access to many of our facilities and services. Our student website, LookUP, will be your one-stop shop for all news, information and links to other services, and 24/7 online access to the University Library’s vast electronic book, journal and database collections will help you find the right resources for your research.
Labs and Workshops
Should you be able to travel to the University, we offer you a range of labs such as the Analogue Electronics and Control Engineering Laboratory as well as the Mechanical Behaviour of Materials Laboratories to name a few. All are well-equipped with industry-standard experimental and computational facilities. You can also access our manufacturing workshop, design studio room and a design-and-make workroom, which are great working environments for project work.
Maths Café
Drop in any time and get one-to-one help with that tricky maths or stats problem. With handouts on key topics to take away and computer-aided learning packages, we can get the problem solved and help you improve your numeracy skills.
University Library
Modern, comfortable and a great learning environment, our library offers a wealth of information including 400,000 books, DVDs, maps and thousands of online ejournals and newspapers. Many electronic resources are available anywhere, 24/7 and our friendly staff are always on hand to help.
Careers & Opportunities
Career prospects
This course is a great first step to becoming a professional engineer and can lead to Chartered Engineer (CEng) status with further learning. You could work for a large company, in the Armed Forces or in one of the many small companies within this sector. You could even start your own specialist company. You’ll also possess the effective interpersonal skills needed to enter technical and commercial management in this valuable field.

Work experience
This course is delivered in partnership with you and your employer. Incorporating elements of your work into your learning, it will cause as little disruption as possible to your employment and help you to make a more effective contribution to your organisation, as well as improve your career prospects.
Ideally, your final project will be carried out at your place of work and be overseen by a mentor approved by the University. If a work-based project is not feasible, then the project may be carried out either at the University or elsewhere, but always with the guidance of a University-approved mentor.
